Kathy Szeliga

Long before she entered public office, Kathy was a teacher, foster parent, youth athletic coach, and small-business owner. She and her husband, Mark, recently retired after more than 40 years of owning and operating a general contracting business and managing residential rental properties. Those decades of signing the front of paychecks, balancing budgets, and working directly with customers gave Kathy a firsthand understanding of the challenges facing Maryland's working families and small businesses — and that real-world experience continues to shape how she approaches her work in Annapolis.

Kathy serves on the Health Committee, including the Insurance and Pharmaceutical Subcommittee and the Health Facilities Subcommittee, and on the Rules and Executive Nominations Committee. From 2013 to 2021 she served as House Minority Whip, helping lead the House Republican Caucus and shape legislative strategy in Annapolis. She is a founding member and Vice Chair of the Maryland Freedom Caucus, and has been appointed to Governor Hogan's STAR Commission, Speaker Jones's Police Reform and Accountability Workgroup, Speaker Busch's Marijuana Legalization Workgroup, and — from 2019 to 2023 — the Maryland Commission on Aging.

Kathy champions individual liberty, fiscal responsibility, government accountability, public safety, and making Maryland a more affordable place to live, raise a family, and retire. She believes public service is ultimately about people — listening to them, standing up for them, and working to leave Maryland better for the next generation.

Kathy and Mark have been married for more than four decades and are the proud parents of two married sons and grandparents of two grandchildren. She attends Mountain Christian Church in Joppa, Maryland, and for decades has been actively involved in numerous national and international Bible studies. Her faith is the foundation of her life, guiding her commitment to her family, her community, and serving others.
